Two people can hand you a piece of paper, both call it a lighting plan, and mean completely different things. One took fifteen minutes. The other took six weeks. They cost accordingly, and the homes they produce feel nothing alike.
Almost nobody explains the difference, so here it is.
A layout places fixtures. Somebody looks at a floor plan, spaces recessed cans on a reasonable grid, drops a symbol where a chandelier probably goes, and adds enough light to satisfy the building department.
That last part matters, because it explains why layouts exist at all. They are generally produced to get you a permit. They confirm that the room has power and enough light to be legal and safe. That is a real job, and it needs doing.
What a layout is not is a plan for how you will experience the room. It rarely considers where you will actually stand, what the light will do to your stone, whether the beam will land on the art or on the floor beside it, or how the room should feel at nine in the evening. It answers where. It does not answer why.
A design starts from the opposite end. Not from the ceiling, but from the room and the life inside it.
How does this space get used, and at which hours? Where do people gather, and where does the eye land when they walk in? What is worth lighting, the art, the stone, the millwork, the stair, and what should quietly recede? How bright is bright enough at breakfast, and how low does it need to go for a film? Which fixtures can vanish into the architecture, and which one is meant to be seen?
Only after those answers does anyone place a fixture. And then every fixture placed is a decision with a reason behind it, documented so the next person can build it correctly.
The clearest way to see it is to compare the paper.
A typical layout shows a scattering of symbols on a floor plan, connected by switch legs, with little else. A better third-party layout will label fixture types, an A here, a B there, which is genuinely more useful.
A QAV lighting design looks like a different document entirely. Every fixture carries a specific type code. Every room is numbered. Every control zone is numbered, so the electrician wires the room the way the scenes were designed rather than guessing. Dimensions are called out to the inch. Interior and exterior elevations show exactly how the cove, the vanity, the shelf, and the millwork details get built. Nothing is left to interpretation on site, which is where good intentions usually die.
Layers. A room needs light for tasks, light on surfaces, light on objects, and light you can lower to almost nothing. A layout gives you one layer and calls it done.
Color quality. Two fixtures with identical output can make your walnut look rich or look grey. That is a specification decision, and it happens at the design stage or not at all.
Aim and beam. A downlight is not a downlight. Beam angle, adjustability, and where the light actually lands are what separate a lit room from a designed one.
Control. Which fixtures move together, in what order, and at what levels. A scene is designed on paper long before anyone programs it, and a layout has no concept of scenes.
Daylight. The largest light source in your home is the sun, and shades are how you control it. A layout ignores it entirely. A design treats the window as part of the lighting plan, which is exactly how ILLUMINATE works.
This is the part that makes the difference concrete. A finished QAV lighting design is not a page. It is a construction set.
Dimensioned and annotated floor plans, and a second set showing control zoning. Interior and exterior elevations. A complete fixture schedule with cut sheets for every specified product. A load schedule for your electrician. Construction details for the conditions that go wrong most often: the cove, the undercabinet run, the illuminated shelf, the floating vanity, the stair tread. Every sheet is stamped, dated, and issued for construction. Your electrician stops guessing. Your builder stops calling with questions. Your architect gets a set that coordinates with theirs.
You do not need to read a drawing to figure this out. Ask three questions.
Are the control zones drawn, or will that be decided on site? Can I see the elevations and the construction details for the tricky conditions? Is there a fixture schedule with a cut sheet for every specified product?
If the answer to all three is yes, you are holding a design. If not, you are holding a layout, and someone is going to make several hundred decisions in your home without you.
A layout is not a scam. Plenty of homes are built from one and turn out fine, and a permit set is a legitimate deliverable. If your project is straightforward, that may be all it needs.
But if you are building the home you have been imagining for years, you should know that the ceiling plan is where most of that vision quietly gets decided. It is worth knowing which document you are handing your electrician, because they will build exactly what is on it, and nothing that is not.
